Free Walking Tour of Cuenca

One of the best ways to discover Cuenca is with a free walking tour. Several companies offer daily tours in English and Spanish, starting from Calderon Park around 10:00 AM. Over 2-3 hours, a local guide takes you through the colonial center, explaining the history behind the cathedrals, markets, and hidden plazas that you might walk right past on your own.

The tour covers the main places to visit in Cuenca Ecuador and gives you insider tips on where to eat and shop. Tours are tip-based, so you pay what you feel the experience was worth — usually $5-10 per person.

Limpia — Traditional Andean Cleansing

A limpia (spiritual cleansing) is a traditional Andean healing ceremony still practiced in Cuenca’s markets, especially at the 10 de Agosto Market. Local healers (curanderos) use herbs, flowers, eggs, and sometimes a live guinea pig to cleanse negative energy from your body. The ceremony takes about 15-20 minutes and costs around $5-10.

Whether you believe in its healing powers or not, it’s a fascinating cultural experience and one of the most authentic things to do in Cuenca Ecuador. You can find curanderos on the upper floors of the 10 de Agosto Market — just ask any vendor to point you in the right direction.

Cuenca Ecuador Attractions: Must-See Highlights

After bringing dozens of groups to this city over the years, I’ve narrowed down the Cuenca Ecuador attractions that are actually worth your time. These aren’t the ones tourist offices push — they’re the ones my own family takes friends to when they finally visit.

Top of the list: the New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva) with its iconic blue domes you’ll see on every Cuenca postcard, the Mirador de Turi for sunset shots at 3,000 meters with the whole city below you, and the Pumapungo museum-ruins combo that most visitors skip. Add Calderón Park — the heart of the historic center where locals still gather — and the daily Flower Market on Plaza de las Flores (one of South America’s best), and you’ve covered the Cuenca Ecuador attractions worth a full day each.

What I tell every visitor: don’t try to do all the Cuenca Ecuador attractions in one day.
