Why Visit the Galapagos Islands?

Planning quito to galapagos? Every Galapagos trip starts with quito to galapagos flights (about 2 hours) — there’s no direct international route. This guide covers how to get to galapagos from quito, airlines, costs, and timing tips for anyone traveling galapagos from quito. The Galapagos Islands are one of the most extraordinary destinations on the planet, known for their untouched nature, remarkable wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. Traveling to this remote paradise is a dream for many travelers, and understanding how to get there is the first step toward an unforgettable experience.

The Galapagos Islands were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Also known as the “Colon Archipelago”, this is a truly unique destination where you can encounter one-of-a-kind wildlife, such as the blue-footed boobies and the famous Galapagos giant tortoises, considered an iconic symbol of the islands. If you are planning your visit and wondering how to travel from Quito to the Galapagos, here you will find everything you need to know to begin this unforgettable adventure.

What you should know first is that these ancient islands once served as hideouts and stopping points for pirates. They also inspired Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking theory of evolution by natural selection. The Galapagos hold several important designations, including National Park and Marine Reserve status. The archipelago is made up of 13 main islands, 6 smaller islands, and more than 100 islets and rocky outcrops. The main islands; Isabela, Santa Cruz, San Cristobal and Floreana are currently the most populated and the most visited by travelers.

Can You Travel Directly to Galapagos from another Country?

It is not possible to travel directly to the Galapagos Islands from another country. All international travelers must first enter mainland Ecuador, either through Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE). Galapagos is a protected destination, and international flights are not allowed to land directly on the islands.

The honest answer: no, there are no direct international flights to the Galápagos Islands. Every visitor — no exceptions — must first fly to mainland Ecuador, then board a domestic flight from Quito or Guayaquil to one of the two island airports.

This rule exists to protect the fragile ecosystem. At the mainland departure gate, your luggage is inspected for any organic material that could introduce invasive species. You also pay the $20 INGALA Transit Control Card fee before boarding. The whole process takes roughly 30-45 minutes — arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure.

Flights from Quito to Galapagos Islands

Flights from Quito to Galapagos depart daily from Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO). There are typically 3-5 departures per day during high season, reduced to 2-3 in low season.

Most Quito departures are morning flights (between 7:00 AM and 10:30 AM) to ensure afternoon arrival on the islands. Return flights to Quito leave the islands mid-afternoon (typically 12:00-3:00 PM). Plan your Quito hotel knowing you’ll need to be at the airport by 5:30-6:00 AM for early departures.

Flying from Quito to the Galapagos Islands is the most common option for international travelers who arrive in Ecuador through the capital city. These flights are considered domestic flights, but they involve special controls due to the protected status of the Galapagos.

Compare fares on Skyscanner, Google Flights or directly with airlines like LATAM and Avianca. Booking 2-3 months ahead usually saves $50-150 on quito to galapagos flights.

How Do Flights from Quito to Galapagos Work?

Flights departing from Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) operate in two different ways:

  • Direct flights from Quito to the Galapagos Islands, without a stop in Guayaquil

  • Flights from Quito with a short technical stop in Guayaquil (GYE), after which the same plane continues to the islands

In most cases, even when there is a stop in Guayaquil, passengers do not need to change planes.

In addition to Quito, Guayaquil (GYE) is another main departure point for the Galapagos Islands.

  • Some travelers choose to fly directly from Guayaquil to Galapagos Islands

  • This option can sometimes offer more flight availability or better schedules, depending on the season

Both Quito and Guayaquil flights arrive at the same Galapagos airports.

Which Galapagos Airports Do These Flights Arrive At?

Flights from Quito arrive at one of the two airports in the Galapagos:

The total quito to galapagos flight time depends on the route:

If you book Quito-Guayaquil-Galapagos as two separate tickets: the total can stretch to 5-6 hours with layover time. Not recommended unless you’re specifically planning an overnight in Guayaquil.

Pure flying time (Quito to Guayaquil, then Guayaquil to Galápagos) is about 45 minutes each leg. The plane is usually a Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 operated by LATAM, Avianca or Aeroregional.

  • Baltra Airport (GPS): Main gateway, ideal for visiting Santa Cruz Island and the best option to connect to Isabela Island

  • San Cristobal Airport (SCY): Ideal for travelers staying on San Cristobal

Flight Duration
