Cuyabeno Reserve 3 Days 2 Nigh


The Cuyabeno Reserve is a natural treasure located in the Amazon region of Ecuador. It is a protected area that is home to incredible biodiversity and a lush tropical jungle.
An adventure in the Cuyabeno Reserve offers a unique experience in which you can immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Amazon. You will witness the amazing diversity of the Amazon jungle. The reserve is home to thousands of species of plants, giant trees, colorful orchids, and you can also observe a wide variety of endemic animals from howler monkeys and capuchins to pink dolphins and caimans, the reserve is home to a wide range of species. One of the best ways to explore the reserve is by canoe through the rivers and lagoons.
Accompanied by expert guides, you will be able to hike along trails in the jungle. As you progress, you will learn about medicinal plants and during your visit to the reserve, you will have the opportunity to meet and learn from the indigenous communities, you will be able to learn about their traditions, learn about their ancestral knowledge and appreciate their lifestyle in harmony with the nature.

For the trip to Cuyabeno we have several travel options that will best suit your needs and your budget.
  • Day 1

    In the morning flight to Lago Agrio. Upon arrival in Lago Agrio, you will go by private bus to the entrance of Cuyabeno River (2 hours). Where we will have a box lunch. At this point the visitors have to register in the Reserve’s of the Cuyabeno. Our Naturalist Guide will give information about the Cuyabeno Reserve. Some important recommendations and other tips to begin navigation on the river Cuyabeno. In the afternoon we will arrive at the lodge. At that time you will assign rooms and you can relax a little. After a little nap, we will leave the camp for a swim in the lagoon to watch a beautiful sunset in the middle of the Laguna Grande. Then, you will return to the camp for dinner. At night you can spend the night in bungalows with double beds and mosquito nets.

  • Day 2

    Option 1 - Jungle Expedition

    After breakfast we will take a trek in the primary forest for 3 to 4 hours. Your guide will explain how the complex tropical ecosystem works. You will be able to learn about medicinal plants and might be able to see some exotic birds or monkeys. We will then return to the camp for lunch and a siesta. In the afternoon, we will go to the lagoon, have a swim and watch the sunset. With a little luck you can observe the pink river dolphins or an anaconda sunbathing in a tree. You will return to the camp for dinner, and take a canoe night ride to look for caimans.

    Option 2 - Visit to the Indigenous Community

    After breakfast, we will head to the Siona Community of Puerto Bolivar. Also know as the largest ethnic group in the Reserve of the Cuyabeno. During this tour you will learn their customs, traditions and way of life. Besides, you can observe the elaboration of the Casabe. It is local dish made of yucca (carbohydrates are the principal food of the community). A visit to the Shaman is also included. He will explain some more about life in the jungle.

    The trip takes 1 hour navigation downstream to get there. And on the way it will be possible to admire the existing fauna along the river Cuyabeno. For example: birds, monkeys, snakes, pink dolphins, tortoises and many others. This is a full day excursion with Lunch in the Community. Too, after that we return to the lodge to go for a nocturnal hike through the primary forest. We will have dinner and spend the night in the lodge.

  • Day 3

    Early in the morning before breakfast a bird-watching excursion is optional. Back at the lodge we have breakfast and you will start the journey back upstream on the Cuyabeno River. Lunch (lunch box) at the bridge. The bus will take you to Lago Agrio. Return to Quito.
